Causes of anemia
The cause of anemia from iron deficiency is inadequate provision of body iron, the increase in demand for this element (the pregnancy, the period of breast-feeding, growth and development of the organism), its improper absorption in the gastrointestinal tract, or excessive loss (bleeding).
Not supplying iron may be associated with inadequate diet. In diseases of the gastrointestinal system can absorb enough iron even though given the quantity of iron in the diet. To demonstrate absorption of handicapped physician may have an iron absorption test (determination of the concentration of iron in serum before and two hours after oral administration of 100 mg of iron dwuwartościowego - twice the level it was expected).
Chronic bleeding may lead to exhaustion of stocks of systemic iron. In females one of the most common causes of heavy bleeding is menstruation. In postmenopausal women and men after 50 years of age przewlekłego frequent cause of bleeding may be changes in the gastrointestinal tract (polipy the large bowel, inflammation, cancer of the colon). A frequent site of bleeding are gastric and duodenal ulcers. Chronic bleeding into the gastrointestinal tract may be confirmed by testing for latent blood in the faeces.
